Sauna EMFs & VOCs

Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMFs)

Our Infrared Heaters have Magnetic Field readings of 0.0-3.0mG when measured on the heater guard. Other ‘Ultra Low EMF Saunas’ have readings over 30mG a couple inches off the heater! Our electric fields are also close to 0 where other Low EMF Saunas have readings over 600 V/m.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Our Saunas have been third party tested for VOCs. We don’t use plywood, glues, varnish, or stains. We also only use non-resinous wood. Some chemically sensitive or allergic people can have reactions to resinous wood like cedar.

What Are EMFs?

EMF stands for Electric and Magnetic Fields. Being exposed to high levels of EMF can cause many health problems including tumors, birth defects, miscarriages, fatigue, heart problems, headaches, cancer, and nausea. Some people are more susceptible to EMF exposure than others. When you are using a sauna, you are acting to improve your health, why expose yourself to something that could damage your health at the same time?

Why Are Our Saunas Better?

We strive to have the cleanest and best performing products on the market. There is no standard in the industry for what you can call ‘Low EMF’ so other companies will say anything is Low EMF. Low EMF should be below 3.0 mG and 10 V/m, but the readings are much higher in almost all Low EMF saunas. They say they measure Magnetic Fields at ‘point of body contact’ but they move the meter 6 inches away from the heater. Who uses a sauna and doesn’t lean against the backrest? They also don’t know about (or ignore) electric fields. They don’t do anything to mitigate these which is why you see readings above 600 V/m.

What Are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are harmful chemicals that are given off by many products through off-gassing. Products such as paint, stains, glues, and plastics can emit VOCs at room temperature, let alone when heated in a sauna!

Why Are Our Saunas Better?

Most saunas are built with plywood, and the pieces of the sauna are glued together. Plywood itself contains glue, and then they use more glue to attach the advertised wood to the plywood!

Plastic covers are often used on the ceiling lights in the sauna. The top of the sauna gets hotter than anywhere else, so the ceiling is the last place you would want to have plastic. That is why we only use glass light coverings in our saunas.

Other saunas will also use wood stains in the sauna. Stains can off-gas. Even if the stain says ‘Non-VOC’ is it rated to not emit VOCs in a sauna? Those companies also don’t care to perform and publish a VOC test.

We only use Non-Resinous Hemlock or Poplar wood. Other types of wood can be cheaper, but can trigger allergies for some people.

From top to bottom we strive to make the cleanest saunas on the market.
